The famous Downs and racecourse — home of The Derby, open chalk grassland, horse training every morning, and sweeping views to London.
Epsom Downs is the area south of Epsom town, dominated by the famous Epsom Downs Racecourse — home of The Derby, one of the world's most prestigious flat races. The Downs themselves form a broad plateau of open chalk grassland, managed by the Epsom & Walton Downs Conservators, where horses train every morning and the public is welcome to walk and exercise.
The Grandstand area at Epsom Racecourse is the operational heart of British flat racing — on Derby Day (first Saturday in June) over 100,000 racegoers can gather on the Downs, with the hill opposite the winning post providing free public viewing. The racecourse hosts approximately 20 fixtures a year.
Tattenham Corner station sits at the bottom of the Downs on the Tattenham Corner branch, with services to London Bridge. Tattenham Corner village has local shops and services. Tadworth, slightly to the south-east, is a larger residential area with its own station on the same branch line.
The Downs are famous for their chalk flora and butterflies, and the view north from the crest — looking across to London — is one of the finest in Surrey.
